Having someone you love struggle with eating issues, disordered eating, picky eating, body image issues, and lack of self-worth is devastating. Particularly, when it’s your child or significant other.

In our work, we find that those who love people struggling with eating issues need:

  1. Education, support and their own safe space to learn to “just help their kid/partner”
  2. Understanding of non-diet living which is making peace with food and body. , We want full-bodied recovery.
  3. A family system that is regulated so that emotions and problem solving are all congruent to the challenges of recovery in a weight obsessed world. Losing weight is never a solution when a loved one says “I feel fat”. Caregivers need to be seen as a safe space and be able to respond consistently to create a source of secure attachment.
