Diet culture demands perfectionism and people pleasing.
You have to eat all the right things all the time and you must do it so that others don’t make comments about you or think certain things about your body.
When people begin exiting diet culture for more intuitive eating, it can feel as if you’re ‘letting yourself go’. This isn’t actually the truth. But we do have to let ourselves feel our edges of hunger and fullness to know where we need to land. For many living in restriction for so long, this is really challenging.
However, all the restriction, the dysfunction, dysregulation and people pleasing repeals recovery.
Recovery cannot live and succeed in places of dysfunction and dysregulation.
So where does that leave us?
The best place to start is with your mind and your thoughts.
Is your thought life around your food aligned with where you want to be with your food and body?
How do you want to see yourself dealing with others when they make comments about your food or body?
Do you allow yourself the space to imagine your food?
Do you let yourself be around other people who are doing the stuff and able to eat food from hunger and fullness?
It’s so important that our thoughts and the things we think are in line with where we want to be and where we’re going.
